Onboarding New Employees with an Interactive Green Experience

Employee Onboarding
PLUS Retail wanted to strengthen onboarding and create loyalty among new store employees from the very first day. I designed a physical onboarding kit combined with AR experiences and mobile learning, introducing new hires to the company culture and sustainability initiatives in an engaging and interactive way.

PLUS retail is a leading supermarket chain in the Netherlands. In order to prevent the high turnover of store employees, it is essential for PLUS to have a strong onboarding. The focus of the onboarding is to create loyalty amongst new employees where they identify themselves as being a part of PLUS.
Concept
The hiring of store employees happens on the same day of the interview and usually the employee will start their first day at work only a few days later. Since the day of the interview is the first and last contact PLUS has with the new employee, I felt this was the perfect moment to start the onboarding process.
Once the new store employee signs their contract, they will receive a goodie bag with PLUS trademark icon. It was important that the trademark did not come across as promotional so that the bag would be used in everyday life.
Within this shopping bag the employee will find a folder with individual cards that serve as the gateway to becoming a PLUS team member. In addition, this folder also contained the working agreement and became a practical folder to keep everything PLUS related in one place.
AR experience on the cover
On the cover of the folder there is an AR trigger. If the employee scans the trigger a 3D introductory animation will start giving the employee a warm welcome.
Tips and Tricks card
The first card in the folder features a list of tips and tricks from local colleagues. This provides the new employee some familiar faces for when he or she starts their first working day. I created a master template for the tips and tricks which store managers could personalise with pictures from their local team.
PLUS Green Experience
On this card there is an image that is also an AR trigger. Once scanned, a 3D globe will pop-up above the card in the augmented space. On this globe various clickable objects will appear that contain either video, infographics, or quizzes about PLUS' environmental sustainability endeavours. These clickable objects are hidden all over the globe, challenging the employee to search for them.
Mobile Onboarding Course Card
On this card the new employee will receive the login details that will take the employee to the Learning Management System where they can go through a digital course on their smartphone that will prepare them for their first day at work.
